Deviation of portions of a radiation beam by scattering centers in the medium through which the beam passes. In ultrasonics, it occurs by reflection, refraction, or diffraction at any acoustical discontinuity comparable in size with, or larger than, the wave length used; in radiography, the scatter occurs by the Compton, photoelectric, and pairproduction processes.
