Limonite or brown iron ore. A local name applied in Virginia to the low-grade siliceous variety, which commonly occurs in hard lumps and is found on the mountain slopes at or near the contact of the Cambrian shale and sandstone with the Cambro-Ordovician limestone. Compare: valley brown ore
