The county town, on the Tyne, 17 m. E. of Edinburgh; has interesting ruins of an abbey church, called the "Lamp of Lothian," a cruciform pile with a central tower, a corn exchange, etc.; was the birthplace of John Knox, Samuel Smiles, and Jane Welsh Carlyle.
