austempering
The isothermal transformation of a ferrous alloy at a temperature below that of pearlite formation and above that of martensite formation. Austempering is the isothermal transformation used to form a unique acicular matrix of bainitic ferrite and stable highcarbon austenite in hardenable cast irons.
